Kidney Health Australia Awards for Excellence
Latest Kincaid-Smith Medal awarded - a very special part of our 2010 launch of Kidney Health Week

Emeritus Professor Kincaid-Smith AC, CBE attended a ceremony to see Professor Judith A Whitworth AC, a former student, receive the Kincaid-Smith Medal, in recognition of her internationally renowned expertise in the areas of kidney disease and blood pressure research.
The award of the Kincaid-Smith Medal to Professor Whitworth bought together the work of two of the most influential women in the history of kidney research in Australia, which has contributed importantly to advances in the care of kidney patients worldwide.
Professor Whitworth is the 6th recipient of this award - the most prestigious awarded in the kidney sector in Australia.
Kidney Health Australia established this prestigious award to honour the outstanding clinical and scientific achievements of Emeritus Professor Priscilla Kincaid-Smith AC, CBE and her many years of service to our organisation. In the early sixties she demonstrated overwhelming evidence of the link between headache powders and kidney damage and campaigned strongly against their use. Her research also resulted in substantial contributions to the link between the kidneys and high blood pressure.
Highlights of Professor Kincaid-Smith’s impressive career include her appointment as Director of Nephrology - the Melbourne Hospital 1967-1991, Professor of Medicine - University of Melbourne 1975-1991, and Physician in Nephrology - Royal Women’s Hospital 1976-1991. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire 1975, for services to medicine.
This prestigious award, given only periodically, is the highest scientific accolade of Kidney Health Australia. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee for outstanding contributions to the cause of nephrology.
Winners of our Kincaid-Smith Medal are:
- Professor Judith A Whitworth AC 2010
- Professor Stephen Holdsworth 2005
- Professor Anthony d’Apice 2002
