What is KCAT?
Established in 2001 with the aim of improving health outcomes for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). KCAT works in conjunction with prominent kidney specialists, health professionals, educators, government and consumers. It provides education for health professionals (see KCAT Education Guidelines) around a number of issues related to CKD.
KCAT offers a series of educational workshop modules which can be utilised for general practitioners, practice nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals. Workshops are offered FREE to Divisions of General Practice around Australia and are designed to assist with developing skills in the detection and management of CKD.
All KCAT GP workshops are accredited with RACGP and ACRRM. RCNA endorsement through the APEC program is available for Practice Nurse workshops or for any KCAT events where nurses may be attending.
Individual two hour KCAT Workshops or a six hour Active Learning module can be undertaken. Workshops may also be adapted to suit a one hour seminar or conference format.
Eight KCAT Workshop modules are currently available
- Early detection of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- CKD and Diabetes
- CKD and Cardiovascular Disease
- Management of Stage 3 CKD in General Practice
- Issues in CKD – 4 different case studies
- Using the CKD Management in General Practice Resource
- Haematuria and urinary tract infection
- CKD – What the practice nurse needs to know
Each two-hour workshop generally consists of a didactic presentation, small group work using case studies, as well as a plenary discussion. A general practitioner chairs the workshop, whilst a nephrologist (organised by KCAT) facilitates and provides expert advice to address questions raised by participants. Practice Nurse workshops are presented by experienced senior renal nurses. All educational materials are provided and include a PowerPoint slide show and relevant support material.
KCAT also assists the Division with the accreditation requirements and completes the post-workshop evaluation report. Over 250 KCAT workshops have been conducted around Australia, with an average increase in kidney disease knowledge from 50% to 76% following the workshop.
