National Capers, Camps and Activities Program for kids and adults - Overview

Kidney Camps and Capers and other recreational and holiday activities aim to give people of all ages with kidney disease, their families and carers an enjoyable break from their normal routines.

Kidney Kids Capers is a daytime activity program for school-aged children with kidney disease and their siblings. The program over three days is action-packed and fun-filled providing children and their parents/carers with an opportunity for networking as well as a break from their normal routine. Held for the first time in 2002 it now attracts over 20 participants.  See Issue #5 - July 2008 - KIDney Chat Newsletter for more info.

National Kidney Kids Camp is a wonderful, five-day camp for children aged between 7 and 17 years catering who are affected by kidney disease for approximately 50 participants.

This annual camp is conducted in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania on a 12 – 18 month rotational basis with the aim of national implementation in the near future. The camp would not be possible with out the support of kidney health professionals at the Women and Children’s Hospital, Sth Australia; Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Medical Centre - Victoria; Mater Children’s Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital - Queensland.

Until 1995 individuals and groups, usually dialysis units, held Kidney Kids Camps in most States. The longest running camp was held in Victoria conducted by the Monash Medical Centre. Ongoing funding and co-ordination of activities and medical care proved difficult so it was decided that a larger organisational approach was needed. Kidney Health Australia agreed to co-ordinate all aspects of fund-raising and administration. The first National Camp was held in 1995.  See Kidney Kids Camps

Volunteers involved enjoy almost as much fun as the kids.  See  photos from:

Henry Giblett Holiday Dialysis Program

Patient dialysing

First held in Western Australia in 1998, it was re-named the ‘Henry Giblett Holiday Dialysis Program’ in 2001 in honour of the late Henry Giblett, a dialysis patient who founded the concept in WA.  Mr Giblett allowed dialysis patients to holiday in his holiday home where he had a haemodialysis machine installed.

A temporary dialysis facility is installed and staffed for one week per year in the beautiful south-west town of Busselton, WA.

Last year our Adult Holiday Dialysis program provided 18 families with a holiday break by using the temporary dialysis unit set up for them in the Busselton WA Ambulance Sub Centre.
Thanks to our supporters we are able to pay for the accommodation of these families and offer a small travel subsidy. This initiative has opened the program up to families who otherwise would not be able to enjoy a holiday due to financial hardship.

Last year 38 families applied to enjoy this break - most have not had a holiday for many years.  We need your help to expand  this program further.  For more details contact Shelley or Julie at our WA Office 08 9381 9311 or wa@kidney.org.au
