OVERVIEW OF
CKD IN AUSTRALIA
Indigenous perspective
|
The Central Australia Renal Study
Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) - Released 27 July 2011
Read Summary and full report here> and KHA media here>
Study developed a range of feasible clinical service delivery models and care pathways to best meet (current and projected) needs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients from remote communities requiring dialysis in Central Australia. Study assessed current issues surrounding delivery of renal services in Central Australia taking into account, stakeholder consultation and activity-based data. Findings will inform policy recommendations on the most effective and feasible service delivery options and care pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in need of renal services, including dialysis, and identify issues around distribution of these services.

| NT MOBILE RENAL UNITS |
NT Renal Services - Mobile dialysis bus
This mobile dialysis unit was launched in 2011 and has some long trips already. It is an innovative way to treat Indigenous Australians who require renal dialysis when returning or visiting remote NT communities (renal dialysis unit module fitted to an Isuzu truck).
Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation www.wdnwpt.org.au Our title means ‘making all our families well’. It recognises if patients are sick and far from home, families and communities are sick and dysfunctional too. By returning dialysis patients to their community and home country, supported by their families, they are healthier and happier, and communities benefit from their presence as they can take part in community life.
Mobile Renal Dialysis Unit WDNWPT (Managers of the Purple House)
This mobile dialysis truck, built by GMV in Adelaide, was launched in Alice Springs in December 2011 and will service areas in the Northern Territory.
