The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program provides around $1 million dollars of funding annually to kidney related research projects.
Guidelines for all categories of our Medical Research Funding Program
Kidney Health Australia each year calls for applications for medical research grants and scholarships, which focus on the cause, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys. See links below to download guidelines and background information. Important general points to note are:
While grants of this nature are usually tax-exempt, final determination of their tax status rests with the Australian Tax Office.
- All Scholarship applicants and recipients should be aware that funding and awards from more than one source is not allowed.
- All categories are nationally competitive and peer reviewed - all applications are independently assessed and ranked on the science of the research, feasibility of the project, and where applicable, the track record of the applicants.
- All applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia, or hold an appropriate study visa.
- All funding results in all categories are usually known by the beginning of December.

Career Development Awards offered for 2009-2012
- Kidney Health Australia and the ANZSN will not support any individual researcher, research group or research institution that accepts any research grant funds, consultancies or sponsorship from the tobacco industry or people connected with the tobacco industry.
- Our partnership Career Development Award currently supports Dr Greg Tesch, who was awarded this prestigious grant in 2006.
- NHMRC have not awarded further CDA Awards in this category, although applications have been reviewed. For further info www.nhmrc.gov.au/fellows/apply/granttype/cda/index.htm

Seeding Grant applications close 30 June annually
Seeding Grants (value up to $15,000 per year - two year maximum) This seed funding is awarded to assist with the development of new research ideas, to form solid preliminary data to the point where they can be submitted to the NHMRC (or other) funding body for full funding. A second year may be funded but is conditional upon evidence being received of an application being made to an alternate funding body, for ongoing future funding of the same project. Should this application be unsuccessful, the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee will consider funding the project for a second year.
The application should be for a genuinely new research idea. It is not appropriate to provide seeding grants to existing projects, which have already received support from Kidney Health Australia or other granting bodies, or as part funding of a longer ongoing project. Preferred ranking will be given to applicants in the early stages of their research career applying for the first time as Chief Investigator.
Scholarship applications close 30 August annually
Biomedical Scholarships provide a stipend for full-time research leading to the degree of PhD or MD and Masters by Research (value $28,000 science / $33,000 medical)
The scholarship stipend depends on the qualifications the applicant holds and are offered for up to two years for a Masters by Research, or up to three years for a PhD degree. Funding is awarded annually for the duration of the scholarship, but application for NHMRC (or other) funding is strongly encouraged.
Preference will be given to Australian applicants enrolled in Australian universities. Part-time students are not eligible. Recipients may undertake additional paid work to supplement their scholarship stipend provided that their full-time student status is not compromised. We strongly encourage PhD students apply for NHMRC PhD funding if eligible. Copies of your NHMRC application are accepted as a formal application for KHA Scholarship funding, but note that a Supervisor’s letter of support is still required.
- Roche Scholarship Funding Roche Products have kindly agreed to support a scholarship for a clinically trained individual (doctor, nurse, pharmacist) wishing to undertake full time research related to CKD. The scholarship study should begin its first year in 2010. Preference will be given to individuals already enrolled in a higher degree, who are not receiving any other scholarship funding for the year of study.
Summer Vacation Scholarship (value now $2,000) Funding for undergraduate students to participate in a supervised research project during their summer vacation.
Kidney Health Australia provides grants for Registered Nurses wishing to study for a Masters Degree in Nursing and higher levels of study. The aim of the program is to encourage nurses to pursue a career in renal nursing, in any of its components - clinical practice, education or research - across the continuum of chronic kidney disease from prevention to early detection to renal replacement.
Funding of up to $3,000 per year for a maximum period of three years is awarded annually for the duration of study, but funding in the second and third year is contingent upon Kidney Health Australia receiving evidence of satisfactory annual progress.
