Medical Research Funding Program

The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program was created in 1970 and has provided up to $1 million dollars of funding annually to kidney related research projects.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO NOTE

At the Kidney Health Australia Board of Director's meeting on December 12, 2009 it was decided that future research funded by KHA would be targeted to align with our Mission - "To advance the public health agenda through awareness, detection, prevention and management of kidney disease" and to our Vision "to save lives and reduce the need for dialysis."

As a consequence applications for future funding through the KHA research program will require to be targeted to these areas. There will not be a general call for applications for investigator driven grants and biomedical, nursing and student scholarships during 2010. The details of the new research funding programs will be announced toward the end of March this year.

KHA's long and proud record of merit-based and peer-reviewed support for kidney and urinary tract related research in Australia will continue (see below recent year's Research Funding Schedules allocated) as in the past and all existing commitments to grants and scholarships will be fulfilled.

The new research program will be looking for innovative ideas and projects that will specifically be aimed at producing information that will allow the burden of chronic kidney disease in Australia to be reduced. The details will be posted on this website and circulated to all stakeholders as soon as they are available."

Kidney Health Australia Awards

The Priscilla Kincaid-Smith Award

Kidney Health Australia established this prestigious award to honour Professor Priscilla Kincaid-Smith’s outstanding clinical and scientific achievements and her many years of service to our organisation. In the early sixties she demonstrated overwhelming evidence of the link between headache powders and kidney damage and campaigned strongly against their use. Her research also resulted in substantial contributions to the link between the kidneys and high blood pressure.

Highlights of Professor Kincaid-Smith’s impressive career include her appointment as Director of Nephrology - the Melbourne Hospital 1967-1991, Professor of Medicine - University of Melbourne 1975-1991, and Physician in Nephrology - Royal Women’s Hospital 1976-1991. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire 1975, for services to medicine.

This prestigious award, given only periodically, is the highest scientific accolade of Kidney Health Australia. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee for outstanding contributions to the cause of nephrology. Previous winners of the Priscilla Kincaid-Smith Award are:
  • Professor Stephen Holdsworth 2005
  • Professor Anthony d’Apice 2002
  • The ANZDATA Registry 2000
  • Professor Villis Marshall 1996
  • Professor Robert Atkins 1994

Are you interested in nominating a candidate in the future? The Kidney Health Australia Kincaid-Smith Medal is awarded from time to time to an Australian citizen or resident for their outstanding clinical and scientific achievement in research into the treatment of diseases of the kidney and urinary tract.

Nominations of outstanding persons suitable to receive this award are invited from individuals or organisations, will be accepted by this organisation at any time. The submission should specify reasons for the nomination and offer supporting documentation and sent by mail to the Medical Director – Kidney Health Australia. Enquiries regarding nomination may be directed to the Medical Director - phone 08 8334 7509.
