Kidney Transplant
 (N/A)
Hi all,
Just wanting to share with you all about kidney transplants. I recently  and most fortunately had a transplant. All is going good  despite the countless medication I have to take. I was very fortunate to have been on the waiting list for a short time while on home dialysis. Was wondering about other fellow transplant patients and how they have coped post transplant. I still get the hand tremours which is a bit of a nuisance but hasn't prevented me from doing things. The other thing is that the steriods make me very hungry!! and I'm only petite. The other side effect is that I've noticed my face is going round much to my dismay. But it is worthwhile, certainly better than being on dialysis. When I first received the phone call, I was in disbelief but I am so grateful to my anonymous donor. I'm still doing lots of hospital visits which will reduce in the coming months and I'm looking forward to swimming again in summer without tubes etc hanging out of the body!
All the best to Kidney Transplant Patiets and those waiting on the list.

I have a question for you, I've been on the waiting list a year so I have a long way to go yet, but I feel scared of the process, but know it would be for the best. Where you scared? How did you feel?

Hi Belle,
You may not have to wait long. Be hopeful. I was on CPD for 18 months when I got the phone call so I guess I was one of the luckier ones. Like you, I was told I had to wait quite a while so I wasn't ready (so I thought) when the phone call came through unexpectedly. In a way it was good that way because I did not have time to think about it too much. I did do my research and had spoken and met up with a friend of a friend who had a transplant some years ago. So when the time came I was surprisingly very calm. In fact, I found courage I never knew possible in me. I stayed in hospital for just over a week and the transplanted kidney took a few days to "kick in" which was for me the most worrying time. You start thinking about rejection and the like but it is normal to have those feelings. The rate of success in kidney transplants is very good in Australia which is very reassuring. It's been nearly 3 months since my transplant and I have more energy and my body back so to speak. (I recently had my PD tubes removed!) When I was in the hospital, there were 4 other people who had transplants so stay positive, it may not be long before your turn.

Hi LS ,i had a transplant about 3 years ago,i am now back on dialysis, why because of a little thing called BK virus.with the tremours it sounds like you are on tacro the round face is due to the prednisolone, all will settle down over time it's hard but you must keep a eye on what you put into the talking hole!.,in the long run you will be glad you did. When i had my trans they cut north south ,a big scar, you may have been lucky and had the small east west opp this look's to be so much better.Iwas in pain for about 12 month's.While i was being treated for the BK(which was every 2 week's for 12 month's from maryborough qld to the PA) i noticed that all who had the east west opp were doing so much better than the other's i was envious. When you are able get out and enjoy your life you don't know if it will be taken away again.A little advise the BK virus "if you or your donor have it will not go away on it's own keep on the back of your renal doctor to have put on any blood form you have it will most likly show up from about 6 month's after transplant,no special blood has to be taken for it just make sure the letter's BK are on that form. All the best to you and may your kidney last as long as you need it to last?...
